Gemini Offshore Wind Farm

The official opening ceremony of Gemini Offshore Wind farm was on On May 8th, 2017. The farm with 150 turbines is designed to generate electricity for 785.000 households, thus being the largest wind farm in the Netherlands. The turbines are operational since last October.

Windplanner congratulates NorthlandPower, Siemens Energy, Van Oord and HVC on this accomplishment.

We were triggered by the abundance of news about this wind farm.

How long would it take us to visualize such a project?

The answer is…..less than 30 minutes.

We thought the hardest part would be to get hold of the coordinates. But that turned out to be easy peasy. We opened the Open Sea Maps and zoomed into 85 km north of the Dutch coast. And there we found the location and the grid of the turbines.

That’s what we call the power of open source data!

So then we could simply select the right turbine, hub height and rotor diameter, and place the 150 turbines at exactly the correct location.

We then added a few viewpoints so we could look at the wind park from different angles, and that’s it. Visualization completed!

And the good news is: you can do this too!
